Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of September 1, 2012 - A Solid Italian Selection and My Splurges Picks

Hello to all my wine friends,

Looking at this New Release (NR), I see a very good Italian selection (more on that later), with some very expensive Champagne, now apart from the wines features in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention. Starting with white wines, a very good value wine from Alsace, France,  André Blanck et ses Fils Rosenburg Pinot Blanc 2010 (626606) at $13.95, a off-dry Riesling from Mike Weir Riesling 2010 from Ontario (229286) at $14.95, for fans of Chablis (Chardonnay from Burgundy) Séguinot-Bordet Vaillons Chablis 1er Cru 2010 from France (289389) at $29.95 and finally, a cool climate Chardonnay (and the only white on my shopping list) Marimar Estate La Masia Don Miguel Vineyard Chardonnay 2008 from Russian River Valley in California (270090) at $25.95. Now for the reds, a very good Pinot Noir is being released this week but only 119 cases for the whole province, Jacques Girardin Clos Rousseau Santenay 1er Cru 2009 from France (281121) at $32.95, I expect this Pinot to be sold out by the end of the weekend. For fans of elegant, well balanced Syrah, Trinity Hill Syrah 2010 from New Zealand (194274) at $20.95. Perhaps a rich Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon for your cellar? Wakefield St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 from Australia (058198) at $49.95, and finally Casa de la Ermita Idilico Crianza Seleccion 2006 from Spain (286161) at $19.95 a ready to enjoy blend of Monastrell and Petit Verdot. Well let’s get started

A Solid Italian Selection; When looking at the list of wines being released, there were no less than 9 wines from Italy that grabbed my attention. A quality selection which includes a Barolo from Piedmont, two Brunello’s from Tuscany, two Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico from Veneto, numerous Chianti Classico from Tuscany and a delicious blend from the region of Puglia. Here are a few of them for your consideration;

  • Canonica A. Cerreto Chianti Classico 2008 from Italy (283697) at $16.95 – For those who had the pleasure of tasting this wineries Chianti Classico Riserva 2007 released at the LCBO last spring, from their Chianti Classico 2008, you should expect less tannins, lighter color and easy drinking wine. There Chianti Classico Riserva wines have 6 more months in new French oak compared to their Chianti Classico. Canonica A. Cerreto Chianti Classico 2008 is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, maturation taking place in first and second usage French oak for 12 months.

  • Rivera IL Falcone Riserva 2007 from Italy (177295) at $22.95 – I only became aware of this wine last year on a recommendation from a LCBO product consultant, it indeed has a big following, this 2007 vintage is a blend of mostly Uva di Troia and Montepulciano grapes from the region of Puglia. I loved the 2006 vintage and I will definitely purchase some of the 2007 vintage.

  • Castello Di Bossi C. Berardenga Chianti Classico 2009 from Italy (994608) at $22.95 – This wine is 100% Sangiovese grown in soil with a high chalk content, maturation taking place in French oak (2 and 3 use barrels) for 12 months, follow by 3 months in bottle before release with alcohol coming in at 14%.

  • Fattoria Dei Barbi Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 from Italy (928028) at $41.95 – From the very good 2006 vintage in Tuscany, here is a Brunello from a family who knows how to make Brunello’s. In the cellar of Barbi farm, they have a collection of Brunello starting from their 1892 vintage. A producer of a more traditional and elegant style of Brunello, their 2006 vintage was aged in Slavonian oak for 2 plus years.

My Splurges Picks;  I know many people who, on occasion, will spend some extra dollars on a special bottle of wine. Either as a bottle for themselves or as a gift for a wedding, retirement or anniversary celebration. There is definitely a lot of choices for that premium market share. Here are a few suggestion of splurging ideas.

  • Antica Chardonnay 2010 from California (290536) at $35.95 - Combining 600 years of Italian winemaking and the warm California sunshine, Antica is an Antinori Family Estate in Napa Valley. Sure is a lot of detail about this classy Chardonnay, a blend of 5 distinct Chardonnay clones, from 10-22 years old vines, maturation took place in French oak (30% new) for 6 months sur lees with alcohol coming in at 14.1%

  • Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 from California (685685) at $58.95 – From the superb 2007 California vintage, this wine is 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, maturation in 33% new French oak, the remaining American oak for 12 months and alcohol coming in at 15.7%.

  • Remo Farina Monte Fante Riserva Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2006 from Italy (063636) at $59.95 – Amarone would be a superb wine for the upcoming cool fall evenings. A big wine with a luscious texture and very comforting, blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 5% Molinara and 5% Dindarella, alcohol coming in at 15% with maturation taking place in 5 hectolitres Slavonian oak casks for 4 years and 1 year in bottle before release.

  • Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve Champagne from France (036962) at $54.95 – The LCBO is releasing 5 Champagne's to coincide with the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Since I don’t think that Jeremy Renner or Meryl Streep read my newsletter, of all five Champagne, this is my picks for an affordable but still very good Champagne. But if Meryl Streep is reading this newsletter, how about Cristal Brut Champagne 2005 at $286.95 ? or Don Pérignon Brut Champagne 2003 at $219.95 ?

Dog Point Vineyard Chardonnay 2009, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand

This Chardonnay is 100% estate grown fruit, barrel fermented, in French oak (15% new) for 18 months with alcohol coming in at 14%. Straw yellow in color, this Chardonnay opens up with aromas of pear, peach, pineapple, lime zest, toasty and roasted nuts. On the palate, medium bodied, lean in the mouth with a slightly sweet and creamy texture with fresh acidity. Very nice length on the finish, with a mix of citrus/ripe tree fruit and refreshing acidity. What you get from Dog Point Chardonnay 2009 is elegance and a great deal of finesse. And yes, a New Zealand white wine with a cork closure. Strongly recommended. Score 92 points

Verbena Brunello Di Montalcino 2007, DOCG, Tuscany, Italy

Here is a sophisticated, very elegant style of Brunello with gorgeous aromatics. This wine opens up with aromas of cherry, plum, tobacco, exotic spices, violet, cedar wood and earthy notes. On the mouthfeel, full bodied (alcohol coming in at 14%), dry, rich texture, good energy in the mouth, fresh acidity and grainy, chewy tannins. Beautifully robust, complex finish with great flavours, mixing power (tannins) with elegance. Drinking nicely now (after 1 hour in decanter), should age brilliantly over the next 3 to 5 years. This wines strength for me is its aromatics and finish, very enjoyable and strongly recommended, score 92 points

On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (with alcohol at 14.5%), loads of energy, bright spicy flavours, crisp acidity and grainy tannins. Very good length on the finish, fresh, spicy and fruit focused. A very enjoyable, elegant and food friendly Shiraz, strongly recommended. Score 89 points.

La Velona Rosso Di Montalcino 2009, Tuscany, Italy

This wine is a pale ruby in color, made with Sangiovese Grosso and opens up with aromas of red berry fruit, sour cherry, red plum, light cedar and floral notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied (14.5% alcohol), bone dry, intense, red fruit and spicy flavours, lively acidity and fine dusty tannins. Short to medium length on the finish with red fruit and cedar flavours, slightly tart and those same dusty drying tannins lingering. A definite food wine, very enjoyable with Italian pasta dish but not for sipping on it's own. A more traditional style of Sangiovese, somewhat lacking in complexity, to drink now or over the next 1-2 years. Score 88 points

Coriole Vineyards Shiraz 2009, McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia

This is the 40th Anniversary release of their Shiraz, of estate grown fruit, their vineyard is on red brown earth over limestone, aged in French oak with alcohol coming in at 14%,

Beautiful deep purple in color, this Shiraz opens up with aromas of cherry, plum, dried raspberry, mocha, cedar and peppery notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, fairly extracted flavours of ripe plums/cherry, licorice, baking spices and cedar,  fresh acidity and fine silky tannins. This wine finish is intensely flavourfull, slightly creamy with excellent depth of flavours. Glad I purchased more than one bottle, because even if it is drinking well now, it will keep improving and will get more elegant and smoother over the next 3-4 years. Gorgeous wine and strongly recommended, score 91 points.

Quinta De Ventozelo Touriga Nacional 2008, Douro, Portugal

A very interesting wine here, although for me, it doesn’t scream Portugal. I often think of Portuguese wine as being bone dry, slightly rustic which, when done right, I find them to be pretty charming. In a blind tasting, I would have most likely picked a new world country like Argentina, Australia or California as this wine was made in a more “international” style. That being said, it is a well made full bodied wine that is unlikely to disappoint.

This wine is 100% Touriga Nacional, aging took place in oak barrel for 12 months. This wine opened up with aromas of black fruit, prunes, stewed plum, mocha, dried herbs and cedar notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (with alcohol coming in at 14%), good weight, concentrated flavours, balance acidity and firm tannins. Very nice chewy tannins on the finish with flavours of dark fruit, cedar and minerals/crushed stone type flavours lingering. This is a flavourful wine that goes down easy, I would be more than happy to drink this again. score 90 points.

Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of August 18, 2012 - Southern Rhône 2010 Vintage and My red picks for...

Hello to all my wine friends,

Looking at this New Release (NR), the LCBO features are; a very good selection of Southern Rhône 2010 vintage, an uninspiring selection from the Pacific Northwest (6 wines in total) and a selection of Sake. Since I am not an expert or enjoy Sake I will give it a pass. Now apart from the wines featured in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention. Starting with the white wines, few of them stand out for me in this NR, but if your a fan of Riesling, 2 of them here for your consideration, Bollig-Lehnert Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Kabinett 2009 from Germany (284448) at $17.95 and Dr. Loosen Blue Slate Riesling Kabinett 2009 from Germany (160846) at $19.95; and for fans of Sauvignon Blanc, the always delicious and refreshing Coopers Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2010 from New Zealand (957407) at $17.95. As for the reds, for fans of California Cabernet Sauvignon, here are two mid priced treats for you, Geyser Peak Block Collection Walking Tree Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (161323) at $28.95 and Summers Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (279398) at $29.95; for Zin lovers, (be warned, a bit expensive) I did have the opportunity to taste Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel 2009 from California (056879) at $49.95 at the California Wine Fair here in Ottawa in March, an absolutely delicious, rich, spicy full bodied Zinfandel. I also want to highlight Due Torri Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2008 from Italy (724740) at $39.95, I know there a lot of fans of this style, including me. Now let’s get started;

Southern Rhône 2010 Vintage;   Here is a pretty solid selection of wines from the very good 2010 vintage in Southern Rhône, France. Keep in mind, many of these wines are young and will improve with time in bottle. There are 13 wines being released, all red with the exception of Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2010. Many varieties of red grapes are grown in this region, the most important being Syrah and Grenache, followed up by Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault in a supporting role. I love the Grenache as a grape varietal, especially those coming from southern France and Spain, as for Mourvèdre, I am not a huge fan, but in moderation 10-15%, it had color, complexity and flavour and when well blended, those wines can be quite spectacular. Here are my picks of Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape from this NR;
  • Domaine Les Grands Bois Cuvée Les Trois Soeurs Côtes du Rhône 2010 (281147) at $16.95 – This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan from 30-60 years old vines. Ready to enjoy now or short term cellar 1-2 years. Pairing possibilities, hearty winter stew, roast leg of lamb or grilled lamb shops.
  • Domaine Les Grands Bois Cuvée Philippine Côtes du Rhône-Villages 2010 (286344) at $17.95 – This wine is a blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 10% Carignan from 10-70 years old vines. A great value Rhône blend which would benefit from 2-3 years in your cellar.
  • Famille Perrin Les Cornuds Vinsobres 2010 (566844) at $17.95 – This Southern Rhône 2010 vintage wouldn’t be complete without showcasing a wine from the outstanding wine produce by la Famille Perrin (makers amounts many great wine of Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape). This wine is 50/50 Grenache and Syrah blend.
  • Domaine Le Clos des Cazaux La Tour Sarrasine Gigondas 2010 (279562) at $26.95 – This wine is a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre from 30-60 years old vines. Wines from the appelation of Gigondas are more elegant then their neighbour of Vacqueyras, with generally a higher portion of Grenache in the blend, as is the case here.
  • Domaine du Père Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 (277608) at $37.95 – This wine is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Cinsault from 45 years old (approx average). As for the ageing process, 1/3 ages in barrels and 2/3 in cement tanks for 12-18 months with bottling on the 2nd spring following the harvest. Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines often shows best 5 plus years after vintage.

My red picks for…;  I thought that I might give you my picks by the predominant grapes used;
  • My Cabernet Franc pick: Les Vignoles Terroirs et Lieu-Dieu de Loire Saumur-Champigny 2009 from France (662585) at $15.95 – Cabernet Franc is mostly used as a blending grape, as in Bordeaux. But Cabernet Franc on its owne is made widely in la Loire region of France and is becoming more popular in places (Canada) like Ontario and British Columbia. Interesting fact about Cabernet Franc, it is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon the other being Sauvignon Blanc. Cabernet Franc is lighter in color than Cabernet Sauvignon with flavours from red and black fruit, bell pepper, cassis, peppery and floral notes. Subjective pairing, coq au vin.
  • My Sangiovese pick: Altesino Rosso Di Altesino 2009 from Italy (658369) at $18.95 – This wine from Tuscany is a blend of mostly Sangiovese at 80% with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sharing the supporting role at 20%. An everyday drinking wine to pair with pasta in a meat and / or tomato sauce.
  • My Shiraz pick: Evans & Tate Metricup Road Shiraz 2009 from Australia (606905) at $19.95 – This wine is a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Merlot, from the very good producers Evans & Tate in the cooler region of Margaret River in Western Australia. Each grape (Shiraz and Merlot) with maturation in new and old American and French oak barrique to mature for 12-15 months. Wines from this region are more elegant and better balanced, because of its cooler climate, the wines are lower in alcohol with a better, natural acidity.
  • My off the beaten path pick: Rustenberg RM Nicholson 2009 from South Africa (278390) at $19.95 – This wine is from the Stellenbosh region of South Africa and a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Shiraz, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. The primary fermentation accurred in tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in 20% French and 80% American 2nd-fill barrels after 9 months the wine is then blended a further 7 months with oak maturation. Perfect pairing, a steak on the BBQ

Burge Family Olive Hill 2006, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia

This wine is a blend of 68% Shiraz, 18% Grenache and 14% Mourvèdre aged in French oak (one-third new oak), alcohol registers at 15.8%. This wine opened up with aromas of blueberry, black cherry, savoury spices, clove, black pepper, tobacco and mocha. On the mouthfeel, full bodied with generous fruit concentration, velvet and creamy texture, balance acidity and silky tannins. This Rhône blend finish is long, peppery, rich flavours and so smooth. A beautifully complex, well structured and balanced wine, even with alcohol at 15.8% (the alcohol is barely noticeable). It would have been interesting to taste this wine 2 years ago, Burge Family Olive Hill 2006 is delicious right now or continue to cellar for 2-3 years. Very enjoyable, score 92 points.

Pasquale Petrera Fatalone Primitivo 2006, DOC Gioia Del Colle, Puglia, Italy

Here is an interesting mature wine, everything from its colour, intriguing aromatics and mouthfeel with no resemblance to its sibling in California (Primitivo is the same grape as Zinfandel). This wine is 100% Primitivo, estate grown grapes (organic farming with no irrigation), with ageing process of 6 months in stainless steel tanks and six months in Slovanic oak casks.

This wine opens up with aromas of sour cherry, blueberry, dried fruit, soft leather, nutty and mineral notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied (alcohol coming in at 15%), low acidity and fine dusty tannins. A medium length on the finish, very smooth with flavours of sour cherry, dried fruit and spices lingering. I would pair this wine with an antipasto platter or grilled white fish. This Primitivo taste like a Tawny Port without the 40% alcohol. An off the beaten path wine that is worth the detour, score 89 points.

Edna Valley Paragon Chardonnay 2009, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA

I made the mistake of opening this bottled as a sipping wine. This is not a sipping wine, more meant to be enjoyed at the table, paired with strong flavours, like fish or roast chicken.

This Chardonnay is bright yellow in color and opens up with aromas of peach, pear and pineapple fruit, butter, vanilla, baking spices and caramel. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, tropical fruit flavours, creamy with fresh acidity. The texture is a bit heavy by oak characteristics on the finish with vanilla, spices and caramel notes lingering. Initially nice and creamy but after a while it becomes a bit too sweet with too much oak for me. Not a bad wine (minds you at $20.00 not a great value), I am sure it will appeal too many, but not for me. Score 87 points.

D’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2007, McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia

It has been a few years since I have been able to enjoy D’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz (the last 2 vintages prior to 2007 did not receive great reviews) but in this 2007 vintage, this Shiraz achieved a nice balancing act between power and elegance.

This Shiraz opens up with aromas of ripe berry fruit, black plums, black currants, violet, mint, cedar and savoury notes. On the mouthfeel, full bodied (14.5% alcohol) rich and fruit driven with good acidity and grainy tannins. This wine will leave you with a very good impression, long finish with layers of creamy richness, fined grained tannins and savoury notes lingering. This Shiraz is well structured and very tasty, drinking well right now but has all the elements to improve over the next 3-4 years. Very enjoyable, score 92 points.

Remo Farina Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2009, DOC, Veneto, Italy

This wine is made from the usual suspects, Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, with the first fermenting process carried out in autumn. At the beginning of spring it is then re-fermented (Ripasso) with leftover Amarone grape skins and seeds soaked in wine, which adds flavours and texture to the Valpolicella.

This wine opens up with attractive aromas of cherry, dark plums, raisins, chocolate and sweet spices. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied (with alcohol coming in at 13.5%) with balance acidity, soft tannins and well integrated oak. Very tasty on the finish with a creamy texture and flavours of cherry, chocolate and spices lingering. Quit a lovely and enjoyable wine and represents excellent value for money. Strongly recommended, Score 89 points.

Easton Zindandel 2010, Amador County, California, USA

It has been two years since I have seen Easton Amador County Zinfandel, I used to buy this wine in British Columbia (3 or 4 different vintage). I was quite happy to see this wine at the SAQ in Gatineau, Quebec.

This wine is from 40-60 old vines, planted on volcanic soil in the Sierra Foothills, maturation taking place in French oak for 10 months with alcohol coming in at 14.5%.

This wine opens up with aromas of blackberry, black cherry/plum fruit, smoky, spicy and floral notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, with flavours of dark fruit, cedar, mocha, cinnamon, clove and white pepper spices, balance acidity and fine grained tannins. Very good depth of flavours on the creamy and elegant finish.

For people who have not experienced Zinfandel in the past, this wine would be a good introduction to Zin. It may not be as big, rich and jammy as most, but for me, it works. In general, I prefer a more elegant, food friendly, less alcoholic (under 15%) style of Zin. This is a great all around Zin for summer entertaining and for the BBQ. For me, Easton Zindandel 2010, Amador County may not be as rich as previous vintage, but I find it to be very enjoyable, score 89 points.

Paul's Picks from the LCBO New Release of August 4, 2012 - German Single-Vineyard Wines and Selection of Old and New World Reds

Hello to all my wine friends,

Looking at this New Release (NR), apart from the featured wines in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to highlight for you. Starting with white wines, for fans of California Chardonnay, Edna Valley Paragon Chardonnay 2009 (984153) at $19.95; and for the fans of Chablis (Chardonnay from Burgundy, France) the strongly recommended Jean-Marc Brocard Vaucoupin Chablis 1er Cru 2010 from France (288019) at $29.95. Another Chardonnay to consider, from our province of Ontario, Inniskillin Winemaker’s Series, Montague Vineyard Chardonnay 2010 from Niagara Peninsula (586347) at $18.95. Looking for a Sauvignon Blanc, two recommendations here, Cape Point Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2010 from South Africa (285221) at $18.95 and Momo Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from New Zealand (009167) at $17.95. Now for the reds, my pick for the best wine of this release, Pinino Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 from Italy (032508) at $38.95; next a robust red for the BBQ, Quinta De Ventozelo Touriga Nacional 2008 from Portugal (657452) at $18.95 and for fans of Ripasso style wines, Cesari Due Torri Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore 2009 from Italy (159400) at $17.95. Well let’s get started;

German Single-Vineyard Wines;  From John Szabom a master sommelier “You may not be aware, but there’s a secret society of German Riesling lovers across the world. They’re not easy to spot on the street, but you’ll be able to identify them by how they refer to themselves: sommelier” I couldn’t agree more, I don’t know of any sommelier who does not enjoy German Riesling. There is something about them that makes them so special, covering all the bases from dry wines to sweet dessert wines, their texture and complexity makes them so interesting.

  • Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2006 from Mosel (282343) at $17.95 – I have always enjoyed Riesling Kabinett from Germany. Light body white wine, complex aromatics, off-dry with good acidity and low alcohol (usually between 6 to 8%). Riesling is one of those rare white wines which could age for many years in part because of the level of sugar and acidity. I have been buying wines from Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt for some time now, having reviewed two of them on my blog. A producer of textbook Riesling Kabinett and at almost 6 years of age, some kerosene notes should start appearing soon.
  • Markus Molitor Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese from Mosel 2008 (282350) at $26.95 – The translation of the German word Spätlese, its late harvest. Which means the grapes are usually picked at least 7 days after the normal harvest. Riesling Spätlese has a fair amount of residual sugar (riper than Kabinett) and naturally high acidity which keeps the wine refreshing. Pairing possibilities, a plate of hard cheeses or spicy Thai or Indian food to balance out the hot spices. If you have never tried a Riesling Spätlese, I strongly recommend wines from the very good producer Markus Molitor, a great place to start.
Selection of New and Old World Reds; Here is a selection of four red wines which caught me attention and made it on my shopping list;
  • Valdivieso Single Vineyard Old Vines Malbec 2009 from Chile (273987) at $19.95 – Malbec is a varietal not as commonly grown in Chile compared to there neighbour Argentina. This wine is 100% Malbec from 80 years old vines with maturation for 12 to 18 months in 100% French oak of them 35% new barrels.
  • Coriole Vineyard Estate Grown Shiraz 2009 from Australia (931600) at $26.95 – If you haven’t try wines from this winery, you are in for a treat. Less of a blockbuster style of Shiraz from McLaren Vale than most, but a ripe and savoury Shiraz with alcohol at 14%. Coriole Vineyard is also a pioneer of Italian varieties in Australia since 1985 growing the Italian red grapes of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and the white grape Fiano.
  • Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve 2008 (050393) from California at $34.95 – California may be an new world region but Beaulieu Vineyard wines are made in a more elegant Bordeaux style. Using all five Bordeaux grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot) with alcohol coming in at 14.5%. I always enjoy Beaulieu Vineyards purity of fruit and restrained style of wine making, strongly recommended.
  • Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2009 from Italy (184937) at $17.95 – Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano are superb food wines with lower alcohol (in this case 13.5%) and food friendly acidity. This wine is a blend of 90% Prugnolo Gentile (regional name for Sangiovese) and 10% Canaiolo with maturation in Tuscan casks.

1- Pinino Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 from Italy (032508) at $38.95

Inspiración Valdemar Edición Limitada 2003, Rioja, Spain

This mature Rioja was strongly recommended by the  Product Consultant at my local LCBO, even at this price. A very elegant and sophisticated wine here, which opens up with aromas of cherry-plumy fruit, gentle wood spices and vanilla notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied (14% Alcohol), with soft seductive fruit, savoury spices, balance acidity and silky tannins. Medium length on the finish with a silky smooth texture. This wine is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 20% of other varieties, with 16 months maturation in French oak. Inspiración Valdemar Edición Limitada 2003 was released from the winery in November 2007 and in my opinion, drinking at its best right now. This wine is a real treat, very enjoyable and strongly recommended. Thank You Niki for the recommendation, score 92 points.
Purchased July 20, 2012 LCBO (137000) at $45.00

My top three enjoyed wines in July 2012

When I look at the list of wines reviewed this month, a few things comes to mind. On the plus side, aromatics, the wines which left me with the best impression, were the wines with complex and sensuous aromatics. I often use this expression; you can’t score a run in baseball if you don’t get to first base. Well, the aromatics are first base for me. I find this element of winemaking very important, you get the aromatics right, you have me hooked. Now on the negative side, I still see a great deal of overly oaked wines. I would really like to see the oak toned down, which would make for fresher wines. This month four wines really stood out for me, apart from the top three, Paul Clover Chardonnay 2010 from South Africa left a very good impression on me. What a well made and enjoyable Chardonnay, first experienced with Paul Clover wines, not the last one, I am sure.

My top three enjoyed wine in July;

1-Wakefield St. Andrews Shiraz 2004, Clare Valley, Australia

http://paulnjoywine.blogspot.ca/2012/07/wakefield-st-andrews-shiraz-2004-clare.html

I wish more Australian wineries would hold onto their wines until they are drinking at their best. This premium wine from Wakefield is absolutely stunning, what a treat.

2-Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett 2008, Mosel,
Germany

http://paulnjoywine.blogspot.ca/2012/07/reichsgraf-von-kesselstatt-ockfener.html

What a well made and delicious wine for such a low price, a fantastic value. Riesling still seems to be a hard sell, I don’t understand why. On the plus side, it keeps the price down for lovers of Riesling like me.

3-Hester Creek The Judge 2008, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

http://paulnjoywine.blogspot.ca/2012/07/hester-creek-judge-2008-okanagan-valley.html

Another winner from Canada’s Okanagan Valley, and for this sommelier, the food pairing possibilities are endless. This is one of those well balanced wines which make your dish better and the dish should make the wine better.
