What a beautiful nose on this Vino with aromas of cherries, sour plums, toast, dried herbs, leather, forest floor and vanilla notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied, flavourful and everything in perfect harmony, well integrated tannins and lively acidity. Very good length on the finish with savoury notes, leather and vanilla flavours lingering.

This is exactly the style of wine which makes me very happy. A beautiful wine with sensuous aromatics, great structure and a delicious blend of sweet and tart fruit. In this vintage, compared to the previous vintage, the fruit is a little riper and all the better for it. A superb value 👌 Most likely limited availability remaining of the 2013 vintage. A very enticing nose with aromas of sour cherries, plums, strawberries, wild herbs, violets, underbrush and light leather notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied, dry, tasty elegant texture, fine dusty tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is medium-long with a savoury flavours and sweet and sour fruit flavours lingering.

I have been a fan of this producer for a very long time reviewing many of their Vino Nobile and their Rosso.  Unfortunately I had not seen this wine here in British Columbia until Lone Tree Cellars started distributing it here. A big thank you for that, I am very grateful. This was exactly what I expected from Sangiovese and much more. Starting with beautiful, stunning aromatics, elegant texture and great flavours. An incredible value and fantastic pairing with pizza. This producer was on the leading edge of sustainable farming. Now I just need to repurchase this superb vintage and put away for a few years and hoping I can exercise restraint 😉 Strongly recommended my wine friends. Cheers 🍷

Poliziano Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2009, Docg, Tuscany, Italy

This wine is a blend of 85% Prugnolo Gentile (local clone of Sangiovese) with the remaining 15% a blend of Colorino, Canaiolo and Merlot with alcohol coming in at 14.5%.

This wine pours a beautifully dark ruby in color and opened up with aromas of black cherry, dark plums, blackcurrants, forest floor, sandalwood, tobacco and vanilla notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, great flavours, beautifully structured, harmonious with fresh acidity and fined grained tannins. A great deal of finesse and elegance on the finish, with nice sweet and sour fruit flavours and savoury spices lingering. I love the seductive fruit and savoury personality of this Poliziano Vino Nobile and the great mouthfeel, well handled use of barrel fermentation, should age quite nicely over the next three to four years. Gorgeous wine, strongly recommended, score 91 points,

Purchased February 16, 2013 LCBO Vintages New Release (988055) at $25.95

Fassati Pasiteo Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2009, Docg, Tuscany, Italy

This wine is a blend of Sangiovese at 95% with the remaining 5% a combination of Colorino and Mammolo with alcohol coming in at 13.5%.

This wine poured much lighter than I expected, a pale ruby with an interesting bouquet of red fruit, soft leather, red liquorice, herbal and floral notes. On the mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, soft in texture with lively acidity and dusty tannins. Medium length on the finish, not especially concentrated but the flavours were very nice. Initially I didn’t quite like this wine, but after about one hour, it really grew on me. My recommendation is to served lightly chilled after an hour in the decanter. One final note, the cork was very dry and hard to remove. Recommended and definitely worth re-purchasing, score 88 points.

Salcheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2006, Docg, Tuscany, Italy

This wine is made with 100% Prugnolo gentile (Sangiovese) with maturation taking place in large Slavonian oak casks and a portion in small French Allier oak barrels, with alcohol coming in at 13.5%.

There is no denying the fact that this wine was made with Sangiovese, it starts with the nose, aromas of sour cherry, plum, currants, savoury spices, old church wood and a touch of earthy funk which blows off after a few minutes out of the bottle. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied, dry, soft seductive fruit, smooth texture, balanced acidity and gritty tannins. Medium length on the finish, smooth, savoury, great flavours with a mild dryness. Lots of finesse and charm in this old school Sangiovese, I truly enjoyed the aromatics and its savoury personality. Nice to see a mature Vino Nobile in our store, perfectly ready to enjoy now or over the next 2-3 years. Strongly recommended, score 91 points.

Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2009, Docg, Tuscany, Italy

This lovely wine is so Italian, just smelling this wine and I think I could be in a little pizzeria in Tuscany. It opens up with aromas of red plum, sour cherry, sundried tomatoes, soft leather and cedar notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied (with alcohol coming in at 13.5%), ripe fruit and herbal and spicy flavours, lively acidity and dusty tannins. The finish is long with bright spicy flavours and loads of energy. This is a very charming and traditional wine with a real sense of place. A blend of 90% Prugnolo Gentile (regional name for Sangiovese) and 10% Canaiolo, with maturation in Tuscan casks. Strongly recommended and a fantastic value at this price. Score 90 points.

Avignonesi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2007, Tuscany, Italy

I rarely stray away from Italian wines when enjoying my favourite pizza from Ricardo’s Pizza here in Ottawa. Wow, what a delicate but intense bouquet on this Sangiovese based wine with aromas of red cherry, dark plum, dried figs, cedar and savoury notes. On the palate, medium bodied (with alcohol at 13.5%), lively acidity, fine tannins and rich flavours. A nice brightness on the finish with bitter cherry and plum fruit and pleasant ripe powdery tannins coding your entire mouth, just how I like them. Drinking well now or over the next 2-3 years. Score 90 points.

Vecchia Cantina Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2007, Tuscany, Italy

What great aromatics on this Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano with aromas of cherry, blackcurrants, leather, earthy and savoury notes. The palate has loads of energy and length with lively acidity and firm tannins. This wine finishes with long red fruit and savoury flavours and fine grained tannins. I am a strong believer that Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano wines are where you find the best value from Tuscany. An awesome wine, superb aromatics (very important for me) and need I say, strongly recommended.

Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepluciano 2007, Tuscany, Italy

From the very successful 2007 Tuscan vintage, classic Sangiovese aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, forest floor, mushroom, damp earth and savoury. On the palate, this wine is medium to full body (14.5% alcohol) and offers a good contrast between rich and concentrated fruit and earthy notes, with balanced acidity and firm tannins. The opening aromas continue through, with a smokey, earthy and dark fruit  through a long and dry finish.  If you drink now, this wine should be decanted for about one hour, or keep it in the bottle for one or two years, this will allow for greater integration of the flavours. Great Value and strongly recommended.

Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2005, Tuscany, Italy

It is treat to find a mature vintage of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in our LCBO stores. A very elegant and sophisticated nose here with dark plums, ripe berries, currants, floral, soft leather, spices and earthy. This wine is medium bodied (13% Alc.) and nicely structered with silky smooth tannins, complex mouthfeel and fresh acidity. The finish is long, savoury and slightly tart. 30% of this Sangiovese based wine was aged in French Allier barriques while the remainder matured in Slavonian oak casks. An honest wine here with a real sense of place, great food companion and a superb value. Need I say, strongly recommended.

Bindella Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2006, Tuscany, Italy

Wow! This is what I like about Italian wines and the Sangiovese grape. The nose is just incredible and complex; sour cherry, blackberry, plums, earthy and soft leather. The palate as, lively sweet and sour flavours, crisp acidity and dusty tannins. This is not a wine for everyone, as it is not very fruity with noticeable acidity, but served with food, especially a tomato based pasta dish. it is very enjoyable. I will lay my remaining bottle for a year, I feel the wine mouthfeel will be better for it. Fans of Italian wines should like this wine, it is well made.
