Pinyolet Garnacha 2011, DO Montsant, Spain

This wine is 100% dry farmed and organically grown Garnacha (Grenache) from 50 (plus) year old vines, aged completely in stainless steel on its lees for 6 months (no oak barrels) and alcohol comes in at 14%. 

This wine opened up with ripe aromas of strawberry-raspberry fruit, soft leather, herbs and spices with a stony minerality notes. On the mouthfeel, medium bodied, dry, spicy and very flavourful with fresh acidity and silky tannins. This Grenache has a juicy fruit driven finish with loads of energy and length. A great summer wine, but I can’t emphasize enough that this wine is better served slightly chilled (around 16 to 17 °C). As it was warming up it almost felt like a different wine, with the ripe fruit character of this Grenache turning slightly tart. Overall a charming and very interesting wine, score 89 points.

Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Grand Reserve Merlot 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada

 

From the very good 2010 vintage here in Ontario this Merlot has been sold out since last fall. This wine is 100% Merlot grapes with maturation in French oak for 18 months and alcohol comes in at 13%.

 

This Merlot opened up with a very sensuous bouquet of cherry, plum, vanilla, chocolate, toast, cedar and savoury spices. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, slightly creamy and very smooth, balanced acidity and silky tannins. The wine finish is long, tasty, with flavours of creamy bakers chocolate, soft seductive fruit and gentle wood spices lingering. I love the savoury personality of this well made and beautifully balanced Merlot. A real treat, score 91 points.

Tinhorn Creek Oldfield Series Cabernet Franc 2010, VQA Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

 

This wine is 100% Cabernet Franc with maturation taking place in a combination of new French and American oak for 12 months, the alcohol comes in at 14.6%.

Great nose on this wine with aromas of vanilla, wild berries, plums, black currants, tobacco leaf, cedar and gentle wood spices. On the mouthfeel, a medium-full bodied wine with a great spicy energy on the palate, fresh acidity and silky tannins. This wines finish is long, with loads of energy and very flavourful. The Oldfield Series Cabernet Franc is always the first Tinhorn Creek wine to sell out every year, and for good reason. It is a youthful wine with bright and spicy flavours. Absolutely gorgeous, score 91 points.

De Loach Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2010, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, California, USA

 

Made with 100% Zinfandel with maturation in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for 11 months and alcohol comes in at 14.2%.

This wine opened up with a very sweet aromas of ripe cherry/raspberry fruit, stewed plums, cola, vanilla and spices. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied with spicy flavours, lively acidity and well integrated tannins. This Zin’s finish is short, but the flavours are nice and spicy.  For me, an enjoyable Zinfandel and I love that it’s not too jammy. However, at this price point, it lacks complexity and structure . Score 88 points.

Paul’s Picks from the LCBO Vintages New Release of July 6, 2013 – California wines for summer gatherings and My picks for...

Hello to all my wine friends,

Quite an un-inspiring selection in this New Release (NR), which is unfortunate, but it is often the case during the summer months. If you happen to be on vacation outside the province you are not missing much. The main feature in this NR is “California wines for summer gatherings” with “Perfectly pure wines” getting second billing. As for the rest of the release, there are a few gems or “blue chip” wines worth considering.

Now my favourite question; If I were allowed to buy only one wine from this NR, which one would that be? San Pedro 1865 Single Vineyard Carmenère 2010 from Chile (249201) at $19.95. A very good value for a full bodied red wine with so many food pairing possibilities, mostly red meat of the BBQ. This is ready to go for those of you who likes there reds chunky and chewy but would benefit from a short time in your cellar (6 months to a year). Now apart from the wines featured in the following two highlighted segments, here are a few wines I would like to bring to your attention;

Starting with white wines;

 

• For fans of Riesling, two excellent Riesling to consider; the first, Hidden Bench Estate Riesling 2011 from Ontario (183491) at $23.95 sweetness level listed at extra-dry; and from the motherland of Riesling, Bollig-Lehnert Dhroner Hofberger Riesling Auslese 2009 from Germany (313536) at $21.95, with sweetness level listed at medium-sweet.
• My off the beaten path pick, Rabl Käferburg Grüner Veltliner 2011 from Austria (032532) at $19.95. My suggestive pairing; grilled white fish, chicken or pork.

Now for the red wines;

·         Looking for a good value Barbera, ranked #66 in the Wine Spectator top 100 of 2012 is Marchesi Di Barolo Maràia Barbera Monferrato 2011 from Italy (748277) at $16.95.

·         Here is a light, fruity and good value Pinot Noir to considered; Redwood Pass Pinot Noir 2011 from New Zealand (326041) at $18.95. 

·         And finally here is a full bodied red to pair with any red meat of the BBQ, Rutherglen Petite Sirah 2008 from Australia (179127) at $21.95. Now let's get started;

 

 

California wines for summer gatherings;  Is it me or have Californian wines had more than its fair share of attention in our Vintages NR this year? Just a thought.  I do love California wines, having reviewed 61 of them on my blog, the second highest, Italy being first. But I find the title of this California segment a bit odd since for me summer gathering means many friends and family over for BBQ and more affordable wines, around $16.00 to $18.00 wines. When I think of value, wines from Argentina, Chile, Spain and South Africa come to my mind first, not California. For me wines of California are better at the mid price to premium range. Again, just a thought to share with you, here are my top three picks for the California feature;

·         Ghost Pines Winemaker’s Blend Merlot 2010 from Napa & Sonoma Counties (329649) at $19.95 – A good example of a rich, juicy California Merlot, made with 100% Merlot with 71% of the fruit coming from Sonoma County and 29% from Napa County, with maturation in a combination of American and French oak with alcohol at 13.9%.

·         Seghesio Zinfandel 2011 from Sonoma County (942151) at $29.95 – From my favourite Zinfandel producer, most years the wine is very good and in other years like 2007 the wine is truly spectacular. I did taste this wine at the California Wine Fair here in Ottawa last April and found it to be a bit awkward at that moment; a bit more integration is needed at this point but should be beautiful in a year from now.

·         Ridge Vineyards Estate Chardonnay 2011 from Santa Cruz Mountain (241646) at $55.95 – This winery is better known for their Zindandel, but also produces this stunning Chardonnay. This wine is 100% Chardonnay, all dry farming fruit with maturation in air-dried American oak, and alcohol comes in at 13.8%. This is a bit out of my price range but definitely worth tasting once in your life.

   

My picks for...; I thought that I might give you my picks by these predominant grapes, blend or region; 

·         My Sauvignon Blanc pick;  Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from South Africa (673913) at $17.95 – For fans of New Zealand SB, venture into the South African section of your LCBO store to give this a try. This wine 100% Sauvignon Blanc, barrel fermented in new and used French oak sur lees and alcohol comes in at 13%.

  

·         My Riesling pick;  Hidden Bench Estate Riesling 2011 from Ontario (183491) at $23.95 – From the “Perfectly pure wines” feature, this extra-dry Riesling from the Niagara Peninsula would fall under the aromatic, crisp and flavourful category with alcohol coming in at a low of 11%.

·         My Italian red pick;  Mazzei Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva 2008 from Italy (288530) at $24.95 – This wine is a blend of  90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot with maturation in small French oak barrels for 12 months and alcohol comes in at 13,5%. This is an excellent candidate for short cellar time of 1-2 years.

·         My Spanish red pick;  Pinyolet Garnacha 2011 from Spain (271791) at $17.95 – This wine is 100% dry farmed and organically grown Garnacha (Grenache), aged completely in stainless steel on its lees for 6 months (no oak barrels) and alcohol comes in at 14%. Great patio wine, serve slightly chilled.

Château des Laurets 2009 Puisseguin Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France

From the very good 2009 Bordeaux vintage, this wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with maturation in oak barrels for 16 months and alcohol at 14%.

This wine opened up with aromas of blackberry, raspberry, plum, damp fresh earth, cedar, spices and toasty notes. On the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied, dry, with a silky texture, loads of red and black fruit, balance acidity and firm tannins. This blends finish is long, very muscular with dark chocolate, rich fruit concentration and spiced flavours lingering. This wine is quite structured and age worthy while still remaining approachable. I really enjoyed this Bordeaux blend but I had forgotten how I much I had originally paid for this wine, I assumed around $25.00. Well, surprisingly at $19.15, this is a very good value, score 91 points.

My top three enjoyed wines for June 2013

For me the month of June was marked by value over premium wines. As we move into the warmer months, I usually prefer lighter reds with lower alcohol, with less oak concentration and served lightly chilled. Four other wines which did not make my top three wines but would definitely be considered a very good value, for wines around the $20.00 mark; Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Kunde Zinfandel 2008, Finca El Origin Gran Reserva 2010 and Les Halos de Jupiter Côtes du Rhône 2010.


My top three wines in June


1- Blue Mountain Pinot Noir 2011, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

When I look at all the wines enjoyed over the last months, this Pinot Noir is the wine which left me with the most satisfaction. I can almost feel the flavours, and that elegant texture in my month. Pinot Noir can be made in so many styles, this lighter style is definitely what I enjoy the most.
 


2- Marqués De Murrieta Finca Ygay Reserva 2006, DOCa Rioja, Spain

Another stunning wine from Spain, I just wish that more wineries would hold onto their wines until all elements have had time to integrate and that their wines are entering their drinking window. What I especially like about this wine is Rioja trademark; superb aromatics.



3- Giuseppe Campagnola Le Bine Monte Foscarino Soave Classico 2011, DOC Veneto, Italy

Another great vintage for Giuseppe Campagnola Soave. Now there were many wines that could have earned this spot but none more deserving then this one, when you considered the incredible value that this beautiful wine represents. This is what Italy does so well, wines meant to be enjoyed at the table
